DIY Tips for Healthier Indoor Air

Modern home construction tends to restrict natural air infiltration in the name of energy efficiency. Many older homes underwent energy audits with the same end result. This tighter envelope has caused unintended indoor air quality issues including buildup of carbon dioxide, high levels of volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, radon gas buildup, and excess humidity. While there are professional remedies for each of these conditions, there are steps that a DIY homeowner can take.

Carbon Dioxide Buildup

Slightly crack open windows at opposite ends of the home. This allows oxygen to flow through the home to clear out the carbon dioxide.

Volatile Organic Compounds

The increased ventilation from the previous tip will help. Also, try buying furniture that is made from solid core wood rather than composite material and purchase low VOC carpeting and paint. Store cleaning supplies and personal care products in tightly covered containers. Eliminate candle burning and air fresheners. If candle burning is something you must have, purchase soy candles, and keep the wicks trimmed short.

Radon

FYI - no level of radon is safe. It is the second largest cause of lung cancer after smoking. The 4.0 picocuries level that some industries in the US use is considered too high by the World Health Organization and others. The EPA has set a goal of 0.5 picocuries (the same average level experienced outdoors). Europe and most of the developed world uses 2.2 picocuries as a benchmark. Seal all cracks in the basement floor or crawlspace. If you have a sump pump, be sure it has a tight- fitting, sealed plastic cover. Contact us if you would like information on radon testing.

Excess Humidity

Run the bathroom fan during baths and showers and let the fan continue to run (with the door closed) for an additional 20 minutes. Use an exhaust fan when cooking or boiling water on the stove if it is vented to the outside. Do not keep windows open on humid days.
